Ticket price at Fort Cornwallis is too steep

fort-cornwallis ticket price

A complaint was lodged with Penang Chief Minister about ticket pricing at Fort Cornwallis by PulauPinang.com.

Dear YB Lim,

According to this foreign professional traveler, the price of ticket of RM20 at Fort Cornwallis is expensive. I have the same opinion with him because there are no interesting things to see and do inside the Fort. The reasonable ticket price should be RM10 for foreigners and RM5 for locals.

I remember it was free to enter Fort Carnwallis in 90s before the fort operation was privatized to a private company by BN and your state government.

Can you please ask your Exco in tourism to look into this matter? Do not kill the goose who is laying golden eggs by charging exorbitant ticket price on the places of interest in George town.

The reply from Danny Law, Penang Tourism Exco

Dear Mr NK Khoo

I am writing to you in regards to the email sent to YAB Lim Guan Eng, dated 3 August.

We would like to thank you for your comments and feedback regarding the entrance fee to the Fort.

For your information, the Fort is now under the management of a private company, Eawin Berhad. Currently the entrance to Fort Cornwallis for locals is RM10 and for foreigners is RM20.

The company has spent RM2.5million to renovate and revitalize the Fort and the areas surrounding the Esplanade. The entrance fee of RM20 is a minimal fee that will barely cover the cost of the renovation works for the next 3 years.

Currently, the management is working on various attractions and activities in the Fort to ensure visitors have an enjoyable and wholesome experience at the Fort.

Again, we thank you for your valuable feedback and comments. We rely on concerned citizens like your kind self for the betterment of Penang’s tourism industry.

Kind regards,

Nadia ALI (Ms.)

The reply from NK Khoo.

Dear Nadia Ali and YB Danny Law,

I understand the cost analysis logic, but do not agree with the magnitude of price hike and privatization for our heritage properties.

Khoo Kongsi and Penang Hill also spent a few couple million RM for renovation and upgrading work. If they all follow Fort Cornwallis
management style, the ticket price for both places should be more than RM50 for locals and more for foreigners.

I hope Penang state government be more diligent and careful in approving any privatization project for heritage properties in future. Penang government shall use public money for maintaining public heritage properties and keep the ticket price as low as possible for our rakyat like Peanng National Park, Penang Botanic Gardens and Penang Hill.

Regards,
nkkhoo
