GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Philharmonic will open its 2012 concert season with An Evening of Arias featuring Kay Pahk from South Korea tomorrow at the Dewan Sri Pinang.

Kay Pahk will be backed by a 60-member strong Penang Philharmonic under maestro Woon Wen Kin.

One of the highlights of the performance will be Kay Pahk singing the classic One Fine Day from Madam Butterfly composed by G. Puccini from the tragic tale of waiting for a loved one who never came back.

“We are honoured that Kah Pahk has agreed to come to Penang for this concert as it would be a boost for the local classical music scene,” said Woon.

Kay Pahk would also be singing two Malay songs.

The Penang Philharmonic was founded in 2010 and since then, the orchestra has presented several successful concerts.

Woon said the Penang Philharmonic Experimental Youth Choir would complement the orchestra. It is meant for youths aged under 25 who have the talent for singing.

They will be under the supervision of a choir master from Singapore’s Yong Siew Toh Conservatory.

He said the Penang Philharmonic Jazz Ensemble was also recruiting new musicians.

The RM35 and RM20 concert tickets are available from the Penang Philharmonic Office (012-562 2117), Dewan Sri Pinang (04-262 2462), Woon Violin Connections Sdn Bhd (04-227 7726/04-228 0980), Educational Music Instruments (04-226 1391), Alliance Francaise (04-227 6008/04-228 9719), Malaysian German Society (04-229 6853), Digital Music Systems (04-226 3340), J Y Klasik (04-829 0928), Sze Chiann (016-422 0730), Lai Hock (016-490 5566) and Chye Guan (012-401 5411).
