Penang beat the drum for PWMF

By ROYCE TAN
THE third instalment of the Penang World Music Festival (PWMF) promises a bigger bang, with an expected attendance of about 12,000 visitors over the three-day event.
A treat is in store for music enthusiasts and revellers as there will be a potpourri of renowned musicians set to keep them serenaded with rousing beats from all over the world.
With music genres ranging from soul to salsa to reggae, the upcoming PWMF at the picturesque Quarry Recreational Park of the Penang Botanic Gardens from March 30 to April 1 is an event that should not be missed.
The open-air festival will feature 13 international bands from Africa, Australia, Belgium, New Zealand, the Philippines, Colombia, South Korea, Russia, Mongolia, Vietnam and Indonesia, and seven Malaysian bands.
On each day of the festival, there will be a musical workshop from 2pm, a Kidzworld workshop from 5pm to 6pm, and the night concert from 7pm.
There will also be a festival bazaar offering a wide selection of food and beverages, souvenir items, handicraft and CDs of performers.
State Tourism Development and Culture Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said the organisers have spent about RM1.5mil, which includes the top notch stage, lighting and sound systems, the cost to ferry the bands to Penang and hotel accommodation.
“We are in need of more sponsorship to help lighten our financial burden, and excess funds from the sponsorship will be carried forward to organising the festival next year,” said Law.
Tickets for the festival are priced at RM90 each for all-day multiple entry for adults and RM45 for children aged five to 12. Three-day passes are priced at RM220 for adults and RM120 for children.
Tickets are available online at www.ticketxpress.com.my, at all Discovery Overland Holidays offices (+6013-339 8113), the Penang Tourism Development and Culture Office (+6016-411 0000), Queensbay Mall, Gurney Plaza, Sunway Carvival, Universiti Sains Malaysia and all Switch outlets.
Preview shows will be held at Hard Rock Hotel and Straits Quay on March 28 and 29 respectively.
The festival is organised by the Penang Tourism Development and Culture Office and supported by Virtual Malaysia, KDU College Penang campus, Straits Quay and Canon Marketing (M) Sdn Bhd. Hard Rock Hotel Penang is the official hotel.
