Big cultural bash

THE Penang Chinese New Year Cultural and Heritage Celebration is back again on Jan 29.
Organisers hope the event this year will break the 100,000-visitor mark.
The celebration will take place in the city’s Unesco World Heritage Site from 3pm until midnight that day.
The streets involved are Acheen Street, Armenian Street, Cannon Street, Ah Quee Street, Soo Hong Lane, Chulia Street and Kampung Kolam.
The state government, Penang Chinese Clan Council and the Penang Clan Associations Youth Committee are jointly organising the event.
The grand, once-a-year cultural showcase attracted 100,000 visitors last year despite the rain.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was present during the unveiling of the event’s banner and poster on board the SuperStar Libra cruise ship at the Swettenham Pier on Friday.
He said that the event would put Penang on the world stage.
He praised the volunteers who were working very hard to make the event a success.
Lim also thanked Eastern and Oriental Hotel and Star Cruise as co-sponsors of the event this year, which will be the 12th edition.
The celebration will be packed with all sorts of exciting cultural activities as usual.
Besides the usual traditional games, cultural exhibitions and lion dance performances, the celebration will also feature a treasure hunt, human chess contest and various colourful activities and displays.
Food lovers can look forward to tasting traditional Chinese food such as steamed buns, stuffed dum-plings and Chinese tea.
Cooking demonstrations will be held as well.
Art lovers are not left out. There will be exhibitions on the art of Chinese tea, calligraphy, painting and bonsai.
History buffs can learn more about Dr Sun Yat Sen’s visit to Penang.
Visitors can also find out more about the history of Chinese clans, festivals, medicine, martial arts, handicraft and also baba nyonya culture.
