IT was a night filled with excitement as hundreds of people gathered to cheer for the competing teams in the All-Star National Chingay Championship 2011 here.

North Malaysia Chingay Association, Teams A and B, Kedah Chingay Association, Jelutong Chingay Association and the Penang Chingay Association battled it out at the Esplanade.

The chingay performers awed locals and tourists with jaw-dropping showmanship which included balancing heavy bamboo poles on their heads and mouths.

The teams consisted of 12 to 15 members each. They were required to perform as many balancing acts as they could within a certain time period.

They enthralled the crowd by balancing on stools, bicycles and motorcycles, earning them thunderous applause.

Team B of the North Malaysia Chingay Association won the championship and walked away with RM5,000 and a trophy.

Team A bagged the second prize which consisted of RM3,000 and a trophy.

The Kedah Chingay Association which came third received RM1,000 and a trophy.

Penang Chingay Association which finished fourth received RM800.

Jelutong Chingay Association members were placed fifth. They picked up RM500 cash.

There was a light-emitting diode (LED) light dragon dance show at the end of the event. [News link]
