HAVING borrowed his brother’s camera to snap pictures of friends and family 15 years ago, Howard Tan’s burning passion for photography has brought him to a whole new level today.

The computer science graduate is holding a solo photography exhibition at G Hotel’s G Art Gallery located on the hotel’s first floor in Penang.

The exhibition features exclusive photos printed on canvas ranging from pre-war houses to bottles to be recycled, all taken with Tan’s trusty Nikon D700.

“I have no particular theme in my artwork.

“What attracts me are anything inspiring, pictures that tell stories and most importantly, showcase the elements of Penang,” said the fine art photographer.

The self-taught photographer also runs his own gallery, StudioHoward, located on Armenian Street.

G Hotel general manager Peter Nast said he chose Tan for this round of exhibition as all his masterpieces depicted what Penang was all about.

Tan is the second artist to run a solo exhibition at the hotel after Ng Kim Heoh, an oil canvas painter.

The exhibition definitely impressed Michael Bleeck, 85, an art enthusiast who plans to buy two of Tan’s photographs.

“Penang is one of the finest and most beautiful places in the world despite the fact that there are too many cars here and also the traffic congestion,” quipped Bleeck.

The prices of photographs range from RM550 to RM1,300.

A 10% discount is offered for all hotel guests.

The exhibition runs until Dec 31, and is open round the clock. Details, call Tan at 016-5511428 or the hotel at 04-2380000. [News link]
