THE MUCH-ANTICIPATED Pesta Pulau Pinang is back. It will be held until Jan 1 from 6pm to 11.30pm at the Tapak Pesta, Sungai Nibong., Penang. Highlights include free performances by local entertainers, an acrobatic group from China and special 3-D shows. The popular Euro Fun Park will make a comeback this year with popular rides like Vortex, Sky Rider and the Top Gun. There will also be a New Year countdown to usher in 2012. Entrance fees are RM3 for adults and RM1 for children below 12 years old.

THE FEDERATION OF Malaya Orchid Society, in partnership with the Penang Sate Tourism Development and Culture Office, is organising an Orchid Festival until Sunday. The event is held at the Penang Botanic Gardens from 10am to 7pm is to promote Penang as an orchid-growing state and educated educate the public on how to grow orchids. More than 300 orchids of 35 species will be on display by experienced and dedicated orchid growers from all over the country. Varieties of The orchids and related accessories can also be bought from vendors.

SPEND A RELAXING TIME at Gurney Drive which has a deluge of hawker delights and exciting restaurants that come alive at night, giving the unique experience of dining by the sea. Its promenade is a popular spot for jogging and brisk walk. The seafront was named after Sir Henry Gurney, a Malayan High Commissioner who was assassinated by the guerrillas of the Malayan Communist Party during the Emergency period in the early 1950s.

Fort Cornwallis

VISIT FORT CORNWALLIS which was built to defend Penang’s port when Captain Francis Light landed there. It was later reinforced with bricks, and some of the original structures built over the centuries can still be seen in the compound. These are the chapel, some prison cells, ammunition storage area, a harbour light, the original flagstaff and some old bronze cannons, which include the infamous 17th-century Dutch cannon called the “Seri Rambai”.
