More Chinese tourists visiting Penang

SOME 40,000 Chinese tourists visited Penang between January and September this year, which is a 52% increase compared with the same period last year.
State Tourism Development and Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said tourists from China ranked third in the number of visitors to the state according to the tourist arrivals by region.
“Indonesia has the highest number of tourists followed by Singapore, China, Japan, United States, Taiwan and United Kingdom,” he said during the 10th Harmony Food Fair at Macalister Road.
“Except for China, the state has recorded an increase of 20% and 30% of tourist arrivals from other six countries.
“With more tourists coming to the state, it has helped boost the tourism and hotel industry,” he said.
He added that hotels in the state had received encouraging response for the first nine months this year.
“I was informed that more than 15% of the three and four star hotels recorded a 100% occupancy rate for these past two weeks.
“And for the rest of the holiday season, they received 90% occupancy rate,” he added.
Law said boutique hotels were mushrooming on the island to cater to the demands of tourists.[News link]
