CHINGAY performers from various races thrilled the crowd with breathtaking feats at the annual Chingay, Lion and Dragon Dance Parade in Penang.

Their skills in balancing flagpoles measuring more than 9m tall enthralled the thousands of people who lined the streets in George Town to watch the parade.

A total of 35 teams, mostly Chingay troupes, took part in the event which began at Padang Brown and ended at the Esplanade.

The other teams included an Indian stick dance troupe and a group of trishaws. Some of the participating troupes also paraded eye-catching floats featuring animals from the Chinese zodiac.

Despatch rider Noor Nizar Zainal Abidin, 22, was among the Chingay performers who constantly drew applause and admiration from the spectators.

“I’m glad we pull it off throughout the journey,” said Noor Nizar, who is a first timer in the parade.

The parade was also an eye-opening experience for S. Shanmugam, 38, another Chingay performer.

“It’s exciting trying to balance the flag pole with so many people watching,” said Shanmugam whose three sons walked alongside him to give support during the event on Sunday.

The spectators had an enjoyable time watching the parade.

Among them were English tourist Jack Norris, 75, and his wife Rose, 68, who took the opportunity to pose for photos with some of the parade participants.

“It’s amazing how the Chingay performers are able to balance such huge flagpoles with their mouths and foreheads.

“There’s nothing like this in our country, even in Chinatown,” said the couple from Bristol in southwest England.

The parade culminated with a jaw-dropping lion dance performance on stilts at the Esplanade where the National Chingay Championship 2011 final had taken place the day before.

Two lions wowed the crowd with their sure-footed steps and fluid moves as they jumped from one stilt to another.
