Beach horse-riding limited to 500m
GEORGE TOWN: The ban on horse riding at the Batu Ferringhi beach has been lifted but is restricted to a 500m stretch.
Penang Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the stretch is located from the beachfront after the Bayview Beach Resort until the end of the beach.
A similar system to the current demerit point system for beach activities would be worked out to regulate the activity.

“This will ensure that the horse operators adhere to guidelines set by the authorities,” Chow told a press conference at Komtar here yesterday.
The ban was lifted since Dec 13 as part of the state government and Penang Municipal Council’s (MPPP) commitment to turn the Batu Ferringhi beach into a top tourist destination.
Chow, however, said the ban on quad biking on the beach remained.
MPPP recreation, tourism and international affairs director Mohamed Akbar Mustapha said barricades were being set to cordon off the zone for horse riding.
He said some 30 council enforcement officers were stationed at the beach to monitor all the activities there.
Association chairman Salim Ismong thanked the state government for lifting the ban.
Salim said a guide will be partnered with each horse to ensure the safety of riders.
Malaysian Association of Hotels Penang chairman Marco Battistotti said the lifting of the ban was a step towards turning the beach into a premier tourist spot in the region.[News link]
