The Penang Island Jazz Festival is back
By PAUL TOH
Fans are in for four days of jazz extravaganza during the eighth edition of the Penang Island Jazz Festival (PIJF) which will take place from Dec 1 to 4.

The De Leon family band performing at the press conference.
Festival director Paul Augustine said PIJF was an independent festival built on the foundation of friendship and had gained a reputation as one of the premier annual musical events in the region and the world.
“The festival has gradually gained international awareness in the jazz and music industry. It is incredible that we are in our eighth year.
“We were told when we started that we would not last for more than two years,” Augustine said with a chuckle.
The scope of the festival has been widened to include more musical experiences to ensure that it continues to interest the public.
Besides the main stage performances, “Jazz by the Beach” at the gardens of Bayview Beach Resort will feature six performances by 12 local and foreign groups, new activities such as “Indie Night” at the Tropical Spice Garden, the Fringe Spot Appearances of Jazz Poetry sessions and Band on the Move where young musicians and jazz poets will make spot appearances at the Fringe Stages on Dec 2 and 3.
The “An Evening …” series will be held at G Spot, G Hotel from 10pm onwards on Dec 1 and 2, featuring the Rio Sidik Quartet from Indonesia and French lady of Blues Nina Van Horn.
The Island Jazz Forum will take place at the Bayview Resort grand ballroom on Dec 3 at 10.45am, with free admission.
Malaysian musicians will be highlighted at the Creative Malaysia Showcase on Dec 3 and 4 at the Bavyiew Resort grand ballroom.
The Fringe Stages have been increased to five with the inclusion of Lone Pine Hotel.
The other participating hotels are G Hotel, Bayview Beach Resort, Hard Rock Hotel and Park Royal.
Showtime is from 3pm to 5pm from Dec 2 to 4.
In line with the festival’s social corporate responsibility initiative, the “Jazz With a Heart” charity dinner will be organised by the Rotary Club of Penang to raise funds for the charity homes that it supports.
Priced at RM150 per pax the event will be held at the grand ballroom of the Bayview Beach Resort.
