Marathon: Kenyan Wave Sweeps Penang Marathon

GEORGE TOWN, Nov 20 (Bernama) — Kenyans dominated the 2011 Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon (APBIM) when they made a clean sweep of the top three spots in the men’s open category full marathon and half-marathon, the women’s half-marathon, two spots in the women’s open event and one spot in the men’s veteran event.
Charles Kimutai Kigen romped home first in the men’s category with a time of two hours, 21 minutes and 56.83 seconds while Alex Melly was second on 2’22:45.36s and Isaac Kiplagat Kimaiyo third on 2’24:26.84s.
In the women’s open category, Margerat Wangui Njuguna came in first with a time of 3’06:38.57s and Phylis Jelagat Chepkonga was third on 3’33:19.60s. The second place went to Kari Elliot of Canada on 3’18:48.58s.
Prizes for the top three winners in both open categories were RM15,000, RM8,000 and RM4,500, respectively.
In the men’s veteran event, Kenyan Philip Chirchir Lagat took the first place with a time of 2’45:27.51s followed by Boonma Jitrattigran of Thailand in second place on 2’50:48.25s and Mark Williams from the United Kingdom third on 2’54:36.25s.
In the men’s open half-marathon, Kenyans were the top winners again with Stanley Kirwa coming in first on 1’07:17.27s, Ondieki Mongare Kelvin second on 1’08:14.52s and David Mutai third on 1’08:32.03s.
Kenyans made another clean sweep in the women’s open half-marathon with Estheer Wambui Karimi taking the first spot, followed by Nijhia Ann, second and Alice Kabura Njoroge, third.
In the men’s veteran half-marathon, Khir Salleh of Malaysia was number one followed closely by Niwat Oithip and Charoen Khankharo of Thailand for the second and third placing.
In the women’s veteran half-marathon, Malaysians swept the first and second positions through Ng Sun Nee and Kamala Devi Kolantha, respectively, while third place went to Kanlaya Towatcharakun of Thailand.
In the Malaysian men’s open category, Shaharudin Hashim, 36, of Kuala Lumpur emerged champion with a time 2’54:46.01s while Muniandy Ramadass was second on 2’58:49.02s and Baskaran Kuppusamy third on 3’02:27.83s.
In the Malaysian women’s open category, Cheah Mei Mei won the top spot with a time of 3’46:43.31s followed by Yee Pei Ni on 3’48:17.32s and Ling Mee Eng third on 3’49:43.11s.
The marathon was divided into five categories, namely full marathon, half-marathon, open, open 10km, 10km junior and Fun Run.
The APBIM 2011, which attracted 27,500 participants from within and outside the country, qualified for insertion in the Malaysia Book of Records as the largest participation for a marathon run on a bridge.
