EXOTIC and colourful orchids will greet visitors to the Penang Botanic Gardens next week as the annual Orchid Festival makes its reappearance.

Organised by the Federation of Malaya Orchid Society (FOMOS), the Orchid Festival will see hundreds of varieties of orchids on display throughout the nine-day festival.

FOMOS committee member Ong Chai Cheng said that the festival was being held independantly for the first time.

“In the past, we were part of the Floral Festival that takes place at the Botanical Gardens. But this year, we decided to have our own orchid exhibition separately,” said Ong.

He added that 50 stalls selling a variety of orchids, potted plants and bonsai plants would be set up to cater to all kinds of flower lovers.

An orchid competition that drew 40 participants from all over the country will be held, and the winner will be announced on the first day of the festival.

Visitors can park their cars one kilometre before the Gardens entrance and enjoy a free bus ride into the Gardens or a tram ride for RM1.

The festival will be held from Dec 3 to Dec 11 and is open from 9am to 7pm daily at the Botanic Gardens.
