Bridge marathon on Nov 20

THOSE intending to commute between the island and the mainland in the wee hours of Nov 20 should use the ferry services or reschedule their trips, due to the Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon 2011.
The roads leading to the bridge from both sides will be closed from 1am to 10am that day, while a stretch of the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, from Eastin Hotel to the N Park condominiums, will be closed from midnight to 10am.
State Tourism Development and Culture committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang urged locals to bear with the temporary inconvenience, as the marathon is one of the biggest sporting events in the country.
“Road users are advised to make alternative plans should they need to cross the bridge. Ferry services will run throughout the night at 10-minute intervals.
“There are also alternative routes for residents of affected areas to get in and out,” he told a press conference at the Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel recently.
The public and marathon runners can hop on any of the six Rapid Penang shuttle buses that ply from Weld Quay to the Pulau Jerejak jetty near Queensbay Mall and vice versa from 11pm on Nov 19 to noon on Nov 20.
To date, the event has attracted some 23,000 participants from 65 countries. There are four categories — the 42km full marathon, 21km half marathon, the 10km run and non- competitive 10km fun run.
Due to the good response, the organisers are extending the registration date to Nov 5, with hopes that numbers would eventually reach 30,000.
Participants can also look forward to lucky draw prizes, which include the first prize of a new Proton Saga 1.3 and second prize of SYM Bonus 110 motorcycle, sponsored by Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel’s owners and managing companies Plenitude Bhd and Nomad Hotel Management Group respectively.
