Address: 10 Farquhar Street, 10200 Penang, Malaysia.

Eastern & Oriental Hotel or E&O Hotel is oldest hotel in Penang, established in 1885 by Armenian Hoteliers, the Sarkies Brothers. (Also the founder of Raffles Hotel in Singapore). Situated in the magnificent seafront, the main building facade is preserved with its 1920s echo dome and old Otis cage lift is still operational, but is restricted for guests. I got chance to use this oldest lift in South East Asia before its restoration work.

Re-open as a luxury all-suites heritage hotel after a major restoration was completed in 2001 at the cost of RM75 million.

For non-guest tourists can sample the restaurants, cafes and bars of the E&O Hotel and relax in an historic ambience.

Famous visitors and guests of the hotel include,

  • Sir Noel Coward
  • Douglas Fairbanks
  • Hermann Hesse
  • Rudyard Kipling
  • Somerset Maugham
  • Sun Yat-sen
  • Charlie Chaplin
  • Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah
