Penang Tourist Attraction :: Dharmikaramma Burmese Buddhist Temple

The temple entrance is guarded by a pair of sculptured elephants. In the Sima Hall, standing in the center is a magnificent 8.2 metres high Buddha statue. The head and feet were made of carved marble stones. Sixteen 8 foot standing images and hundreds of smaller white figures grace the wall behind the central image.

Another attraction at the temple is the Arahant Upagutta Shrine constructed in 1976. Arahant Upagutta was believed to possess the super natural power to overcome all obstacles, problems and fulfilling wishes of devotees.

Further inside the temple compound is a big three-dimension (3D) wall mural and a tableau that depicts the Great Renunciation of Prince Siddhattha.

The big pool in front of the mural is a “wishing pool” with several revolving metal bowls labelled with wishes such as “health”, “wealth” and others. Coins collected from the pool are donated to the temple.

The temple is presently managed by its 7th chief monk. In order to facilitate and complement the practice of Buddhism, the temple has a main shrine hall, a sima hall, a dining hall, monks’ quaters, preceptees’ lodge, sunday school, a library and a lecture hall.

Being one of the earliest and the only Burmese Buddhist temple in Malaysia and featuring this historic pagoda, the temple’s well and sima hall, the tempple was designated in 1988 as one of the state historic sites to be preserved as a tourist attraction. The winner of the 1st prize in the state landscaping and beautification programm held in 1997 and 2001.
