Penang Street Food :: Satay
The Malaysian-style kebab with its skewers of meat grilled on the spot over charcoal fire is usally available in chicken, beef, mutton and squids but there are some who serve port meat, horse meat, deer mean and kangaroo meat.
Turmeric is a compulsory ingredient used to marinate satay, which gives the dish its characteristic yellow colour. Spices are also added to serve the inquisitive taste buds.
The peanut sauce dip is another key factor in determining a good satay. Some stall operators even mix their peanut gravy with biscuit crunch for a crunchier taste.
Authentic satay is prepared by grilling the meat over barbecue pit to make sure the meat is cooked from inside out. Besides, the smoky charred flavor of the meat is also very enticing. Slices of cucumber and spring onion usually are served together with the satay.
