Penang Hill Corporation To Study All Factors Before Deciding Fare Structure

GEORGE TOWN, March 2 (Bernama) — The Penang Hill Corporation will study all factors including the affordability of frequent users before deciding on the fare structure for the new funicular train service at Bukit Bendera here.
Its director Datuk Lee Kah Choon said in a statement here Wednesday that affordability of users, especially frequent users like local residents, service providers, senior citizens and students would be taken into account.
On Monday, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said the new funicular train service, which replaced the one in existence for 87 years, would be handed over to the Penang Hill Corporation on March 19.
Ng said after the handing over, matters pertaining to maintenance of the train service would be handled by the Penang Hill Corporation and the state government.
The operation of the Bukit Bendera train service stopped since Feb 22 last year for upgrading work costing RM68.8 million. The funicular tram, used since 1923, has been replaced with an electric train to make the train ride more comfortable.
